Lewis Hamilton – Completed
I think this painting is more or less finished now. I might make more adjustments later to the catchfence, but I’m a lot happier with it now. The problem was in not considering what was behind the fence. Since it is semi-transparent it’s important to be disciplined and to figure out the perspective of the trees behind it, as it is with any objects in the background. Even though the trees and the buildings aren’t the centre of attention, if their lines of perspective and vanishing points are wrong, it can spoil the whole picture.
I’m pretty happy with the final painting. The idea of planning out the values and really pushing the separation between dark, medium and light has worked. I think I’ll do the same thing with the next painting. Putting more preparation into the background was also a success, as was the plan of restricting myself to bright red and a little yellow offset by a cool grey.
I’ll leave it to dry now and then take a better photograph of it in a few days.
